This is a good idea - it will allow you to speak casually, to reassure him/her that you value your boss' friendship, and it keeps your 'bridges' intact.

Good luck!

If you normally take lunch together and speak frankly, yes, that's the time. Otherwise, ask boss for some time after work, and spill the beans. If you are in a professional type environment, you should also hand boss a letter explaining your decision and asking for his/her support in your next endeavor.

Type a letter and hand it to your boss, tell him you 'love' him and you're terribly sorry but you have to do this. Maybe hel'll ask you to marry him :)

If he feels the same way he'll accept your resignation and send you on your way, he'll probably be upset but that's his tough luck.

Nope, do it in a professional manner and in a professional setting. And do it before lunch. Then at lunch you can discuss non-professional matters.
