Someone buys from me (on Ebay) & pays by Paypal...... the sum of money is around £400 which includes £200 postage to Australia. ( there are a number of heavy parcels being sent by Airmail)..and doesn't bat an eyelid at the postage charge tho I did offer 2 options & he went for the most expensive ...makes me suspicious that he may not be genuine although the money is in my Paypal account as he has contacted me a number of times since enquiring if the goods have gone yet as though he's in some big hurry. This is the first thing this buyer has bought on Ebay. ( under that user name anyway) His Paypal account is not verified.... how do I know if this person is genuine & do I have any form of protection if it all goes t*ts up?? Or what can I do to ensure that I am not being scammed in some way before I send the goods?

I'd withdraw the funds from PayPal into my personal bank account. Then, and only then, after the funds have CLEARED, would I send the merchandise.

Overseas Paypal is a risk. If it turns out they are using a cc that is stolen or they decide to claim 'non receipt', Paypal will yank the $ back. I know because I have been an eBay seller for 5 years and I take cc Paypal. I have had about 5 transactions where I shipped and the buyer ended up getting their money back....and I was out the cost of the item plus the shipping fees.

The best rule is to only accept international money orders in U.S. dollars for overseas shipping, but that will greatly reduce the number of bids you get. It could all be coincidence but I can absolutely see why you are are leary. Did you check his bidding history or just assume that this is the first thing he has won since his feedback doesn't reflect anything? Also, when you listed the item, did you say you would accept International CC Paypal?

To my knowledge, it is quite difficult to get signature confirmation with Int'l deliveries. And even if you take the $ out of your account, if Paypal decided to take the $ back, your account will be suspended and in the red until you clear up this situation. Some people would just walk away from the account and call it a day but if you are a seller for more than just extra cash, that can be a problem. Also, if this is linked to your bank account, it was my understanding that Paypal can simply take the $ from there if your acct. is at a zero balance.

I guess you need to really follow your gut on this one...that is a big amount of $ to lose to fraud....good luck.

Well since the money is in the pay pal account there shouldn't be a problem. If he wanted the more expensive shipping why is that a problem..you did offer it. He has probably contacted you because of the amount of time you said you would ship out the items. And if you haven't done so you are risking your feedback score. Ask the person to verify their pay pal account for the protection of the both of you. This person might actually want it in a hurry, you never know what occasion they have coming up. But again, if the account isn't verified you won't be covered if something should happen.

Being new to ebay isnt a bad thing. Him asking you when your sending the items doesnt mean hes trying to steal from you. It might be his first experience on ebay and is probably eager to receive his items. Him choosing the more expensive shipping could just be a matter of faster delivery time. And besides if you got the money in your paypal account use it already or have it transfered to your bank account.

I have been selling computers on ebay for almost 3 years now and have had very little bad experience.

What is wrong with paypal? I am just curious, I do not know anything but heard paypal is the way to go on there...I will look back to see what others say since I plan on selling things there also very soon. THANK YOU and here is a star for asking something I probably would ask.

If you can get him to verify paypal first, do so! Verification usually requires a transaction or two. If the money is in your account, then he had to have money to give you. He also has a credit card in there as back usually. You can always get reimbursed by paypal up to $1000 so I wouldn't be worried.
Aside from that...
If he paid you what you were asking, then you are obligated to send him the goods as requested no matter the cost. Keep in mind, what you are selling him may be more expensive than what he can get it for in his country including the shipping.

Because you are the seller and you have already been paid, you have no basis for doing anything other than ship the merchandise. You and this person entered into a valid and binding contract. Ship it with whatever sorts of proof of delivery are available to you where you live. If possible send it so that a signature is required. That way you can have a paper trail should the guy come back and give you any grief.

Email ebay support and they might be able to help.

If the money is in your account then send the item. If you don't feel comfortable where the money is move it. I know that I am in a hurry if I buy stuff on ebay so don't be too alarmed if he is contacting you about shipping.

You have the money already in your paypal and you're wondering if it's legit?

The other post options you offered were they as fast or as secure? Some buyers want their purchase quickly and in good condition.

But, unless you stated in your ad that you wouldn't ship to first time buyers or that you wouldn't accept paypal... you've pretty much put yourself in a position to ship them as expeditiously as possible.

Of course, be sure you put a return receipt on your packages to make sure he has to sign for them.

If I understand you correctly, you're afraid that after you send the package he'll ask for a refund from paypal?

Send the package with return receipt, signed-for postage so you know it gets there, and insure it.
