RAM will speed up your computer. You can run a free test at http://www.crucial.com and find out what kind of RAM (memory) your computer needs. It will automatically test your system and tell you what you need and have in the computer (each slot).

You can get cheap memory at http://www.tigerdirect.com or http://www.newegg.com

RAM = Random Access Memory

Your computer has two forms of memory: the Hard Drive, or the C Drive (most often seen as C:/), which is what holds all the major information in your computer... all the programs and computations are done there...

Then there's RAM. RAM is what your computer uses to run the programs contained on your C Drive. Depending on what sort of processor you have in your computer, will dictate how much RAM your computer can safely use; if your processor has not enough RAM, then there will be programs your computer won't be able to use...

If your processor has at least as much RAM as it needs to run your programs, then your computer should work just fine.

And even, if your computer has too much RAM for your processor to handle, your computer won't work correctly.

Getting RAM upgrades isn't hard to do. Do some calling around and see which computer fix-it shops are educated in your computer's running system and language (different computers speak different languages, so to speak. A computer from Apple won't speak the same language as a Macintosh, so the person working on your computer needs to know which language he/she needs to speak with the computer in order to fix it, if needs be).

Some computer companies, such as Dell, require that you get RAM chips and other such upgrades directly from them... another companies RAM chips won't work in their computers. I had the same problem with my computer not long ago. The RAM chips aren't really that expensive, and they'll boost your computer's performance by quite a bit. It only takes a few minutes to install the RAM chip and you're good to go... no formating is needed; your computer will automatically accept the extra RAM and you should be able to use more programs immediately.

RAM is the random access memory that your programs go into when they are running. Most of the stores like Staples, Circuit City, BestBuy, CompUSA, OfficeMax, etc sell it and often have sales with rebates that make it really cheap to buy. As for putting it in some will offer free installation and others charge a small fee. If you have ever done any work on your own computer you would find the RAM installation easy as a DIY activity.

RAM: Random Access Memory. This the is memory that is used only when there is electricity to your machine. This is memory therefore that is lost when you power down. The processor uses this memory to process instructions.

What kind of laptop do you have? Once I know that, I can tell you what you should get. Do you know how much memory you have now? (right click 'my computer' and read the numbers at the bottom of the 'general' tab. One of them will say 256Mb or 128Mb or 64Mb, etc...
