i posted a Q earlier about strange activity on my bank card. 5.50 was taken from my account from WP stagecoach. since searching google, there are forums with people whove had the same thing, so its obviously a scam. Any one else had this? How safe are out debit and credit cards? it makes me wanna take all my money and shove it under my mattress!

Hello, I work for a bank, I had a customer with the same transaction on their account. You need to go into your branch of your bank and report it as fraud.

My switch card has been cloned twice and I've had a credit card cloned too! I've never been out of pocket because it was picked up by the bank before me!!!!
Recently, we have had our identity stolen by a woman who went into a carphone warehouse in Denton and obtained 2 phones at our address using our surname but a different first name. She also obtained 2 more phones using my in-laws surname and address.
I also received an AOL bill about 18 months ago for around £800 and I've never even had an AOL account.......
Nobody seems interested though - the carphone warehouse didn't seem too bothered and the police definitely weren't.
I have spent hours on the phone trying to sort it out and am still getting phone calls and post for this bloody woman!!
I don't know what the answer is, the shops should take more precautions about identity by asking for driving licences or passports.

Seems your card has been 'cloned', most likely when using it at a Petrol Station.

The 'chip' can't be cloned, but the Magnetic Strip can be.... and (joy of joys) the SAME PIN NUMBER is used to authorise both 'chip' transactions and Mag. Strip transactions ..

So when you authorise a chip payment they 'snoop' your PIN and can then use that with a Mag. Strip clone ...

... needless to say the fact that many 3rd world countries will continue to use Mag. Strip authorisation for the foreseeable future never even occured to the morons in the Banking industry ...

Ps what's the collective noun for a group of Bankers ?

ans. a 'Wunch' (as in a 'Wunch of Bankers')

Well first thing you have to do is talk to your bank manager and dispute the charge. Then ask them to issue you a new debit card. It seems lately the thing to do is hack into a department stores system and steal card numbers. It has happened to Marshalls and other stores recently. I work in a bank and have seen it happen. But please get a new card and beware. There are new security systems in place. Be careful using the card online.
Good Luck!!

You need to take this very seriously. Identity theft is a growing problem. Contact your bank immediately and let them know about the bogus charge. They can remove it and investigate. Also, go ahead and get your bank to give you another bank card with a different number.
