You mean garter snakes?

They eat bugs.

Normally in the wild Garter Snake will eat about anything they can catch and overpower, appropriate sized rodents (mice and rats), frogs, bugs, etc.. But in captivity they are normally maintained on rodents, since they are readily accessible.

If it’s a snake you are keeping in captivity, be sure and provide the proper habitat / cage. It doesn’t need to be expensive, so don’t let the salesman talk you out of your hard earned money for a bunch of fancy do-dads (i.e., climbing logs, fancy hiding things, heat rocks, etc) that the snake would care less about.

A rubbermaid type container with a people type multiple setting heating pad (that you could pick up from Walmart or Target) to place under one end for heat will be just fine and you can get a cheap plastic dog or cat food / water bowl that has cut outs along the bottom edge that will serve as a hiding area as well as a water dish.

You can secure the lid with weights or duct tape if there is a concern about the snake escaping.

Save your hard earned money for the things your snake will really enjoy, rodents!

If you would post the length of the snake and what part of the country he was found, it may be possible to provide more information on it.

A site you may be interested in checking out is kingsnake.com, it has a lot of info etc on reptiles.

the snake will eat worms, crickets, and its favorite small gold fish. The food must be no larger than the fattest part of the snake.

Hello..he could mean garter or garden/gopher snakes ( as I've heard many people call them ) not that it really matters.. the food is still pretty much the same... tho with wild gopher snakes, they prefer their food alive & kicking.. are very agressive and do not make good pets.. so please don't try to catch them & make them pets...Take Care :)

I have a bunch of them living under one of my decks. I heard a frog out there the past couple of days/nights. Very quiet today, so maybe they eat frogs!

its garter, and they eat pinkies (fetal mice) as babies, and when they get older thay can get 100% of their nutrution from mice. if you want to treat them to something different, they also eat fish and night crawlers.
