Think about the consequences of your answer. What really is the reason for a government and what is their responsibility to the people? Is this function different in a monarchy vs a republic or democracy? Is there another entity that should be in the mix and isn't? What level should the gvt play at?

The basic function is to protect the lives and property of the citizenry, from theft internally and and invasion externally. This means that there must be a mechanism to enforce contracts, a mechanism to stop crime, and armed forces to protect against invasion. In addition to these essentials, there are many other useful functions which government can do, such as to create and maintain roads. In the Constitution, the particular powers of the Federal government are listed in Article I, Section 8, and limited to those by Amendment IX. But the Supreme Court, in the partial-birth abortion decision, has effectively repealed the Section 8 limitations, and the Congress is now free to legislate on anything that it pleases. I consider this to be a very bad thing.

The original intent of our Federal Government was defense, while letting the State Governments make there own laws and such.

We are so far away from that now that most everyone thinks that the government is an entitlement program where they no longer have to do much for themselves except go to work (and many don't even believe in that).

I believe the Federal Governments responsibility should only be to protect us from invaders and to advise states when they cannot determine on there own what would be best.

I believe that the cities, counties and states in that order are the ones that should be determining what there communities rules and laws should be.

No social security, no social health care, and certainly they should not have a hand in education.

The government of a constitutional republic offers the most freedoms to its citizens. Its function is to represent the will of the people and enforce laws.It quickly degenerates into a democracy when people fail to hold their leaders accountable for issuing edicts and mandating certain behaviors outside the parameters of the constitution[and any amendments, and bill of rights].The U.S. was a republic,is now a democracy, and is soon to be a Fascist Police State.

The function of the Government isn't to be for Christians benefit. Plain and simple. All THAT, the Gov. cast out the window in the UNION of Roman and heretics. The big picture is far beyond simple stuff like this.
PEACE...

Our present Gov. is and always have been for the rich, the intellect, and they are a respecters or PERSONS.
A wise man scale the city of the mighty, and caste down the STRENGTH of the CONFIDENCE .

a genuine democratic government demands that all of us participate interior the vote casting and governing approaches. How sensible could or not that's for each and each citizen interior the U. S. to take day out of their lives to pass to Capital Hill and take part in governing? that's impossible through fact there are too many human beings. Direct democracy works nicely in a placing that includes few human beings. Greece (please the final option me if i'm incorrect) had a sufficiently small inhabitants and practiced direct democracy.

The legitimate purpose of the US government, the reason it was created, is to protect the rights of the American people.

What every government in history has /actually/ done, is continually attempt to expand its power.

Either of those could define the 'function' of government, depending on how you look at the word.

function: to stay in power no matter who they have to kill

responsibility to the people: keep them in the dark; spread misinformation; control the media

differences: absolutely none

another entity: rule of law that limits government...altho that sure doesn't last long

level: we should pay little or no taxes; they should do the absolute minimum to keep society running and let the free market and local governments control the rest
