I don't think so. Ponting acquired an already strong team which continues to deliver. That said, one thing admirable about Ponting is his ability to lead from the front. His batting performance has improved a lot more since he started leading the team which implies that he is not under the captaincy pressure.
A good captain is one who causes transformation when the going is not that rosy. Arjuna Ranatunga is one name that stands out for what he did leading to Sri Lanka winning the 1996 world cup. Another name is Stephen Fleming of New Zealand simply because NZ has largely been a team of decent players who are a collective force though not individual stars. Among Australian captains, I would rate Allan Border higher than both Ponting and Waugh. Simply for his ability to cause a turnaround when Australia was not a force that they are today.

If you want to go on strike rate, then yes, Punter is the best Captain in cricket history, with possible exception of Sir Donald Bradman. However, if you are going on leadership ability, then the best captain ever in cricket in my mind is Allan Border.
He took the reigns of Australia that could barely win a Test match, after the Kim Hughes debacle, helped lay the foundations of Australian Cricket, along with then-Coach Bob Simpson. He brought a professionalism to cricket that is now adopted throughout the cricketing world, and more importantly, after some intial struggles, he led Australia to several milestones, including the 1987 World Cup and regaining the Ashes in 1989.

No ways Ricky Ponting is very lucky to have a such team. Give a team like that to any captain in the world and he can be a champion like Ponting. Rather I'll say Mahela as a good captain

He is one of the best captains actualy........and not the best ever....becuase he was given a perfect team after Steve Waugh's retirement.....the team was settled and he had to take that team furthur..though i agree that he didn't let his team step down at any point ....this is no doubt a great credit..but i call that captian the best ever, who builds the team and then take it to the winning track !and there are few captians who did that in past !! leading a perfect team is a bit easy job then making it perfect and taking it furthur is kind of difficult..and Ricky comes in the first category ! But no doubt he has made the Australian cricket history glorious and and for that he deserve all the credit !! and for today i don't see any other captain who could compete his skills and dedication for his country!

I think he isnt the best EVER captain, but he is an excellent captain. His attitude is always positive, and he just has good captaincy and leadership. He has an excellent team, though, and they didnt lose a single game in the CWC 2007.
Ponting is a great captain. I hope that the neaxt Aussie captain is Michael Clarke!!

He's prolly not even the current best captain. I would rate Jayarwardena and Fleming better than him, Jayawardena is pretty new to captaining an international side as well.

no. i don't he is the "best" captain...but he sure is lucky and successful...all the australian players are really good...and at the end the captain can do only so much...everything depends on how all the team mates play. because all the players are good, ponting is leading the best team, but it doesn't mean that his team is good because of him.
