The problem with acting smart is eventually you're going to come across someone who actually knows something about what you're acting smart about and then you look foolish. It's idiotic to state as fact things you don't know about, so acting smart is really stupid. Know interesting things and then you don't have to act smart, even knowing a little about something arcane yet interesting will go a long way to making you look smart, and bingo, you're in (whatever you're attempting to get into).
