Moss does not point to civilization. A lot of people also have been mislead to the information moss only grows on the north side of trees. While in most cases this is true, it does not apply every single time you see moss on a tree. The reason moss would grow on the north side of a tree as opposed to the south side is lack of sunlight. Without direct sunlight, more of the moss is allowed to stay moist and grow it's little mossy heart out.
