Next to the stergeon (cannot keep) Koi live the longest of all kept fish between 70-100 years. Easy if kept in outside ponds.

Gold fish in tanks If taken care of up to 42 years. Most people do not know how to care for goldies and they usually last only a few years.

Iniaz has an excellent point, that's really two questions. Which fish will live the longest (assuming you mean something could be in an aquarium) would probably be a lungfish. Sturgeon certainly live longer and probably Koi, but aren't good aquarium fish unless you have a few hundred gallon tank for a Koi or a few thousand for the Sturgeon.

No one really knows for sure how long a lungfish lives, but the Shedd aquarium in Chicago has one on display that they recieved as an adult in 1933. So that's at least 75 years and counting.

Easy to take care of? Most typical community fish are about the same in that regard. Once your tank is up and running smoothly any hardy community fish will do well with about the same level of care.

The trick question here is -- 1. live the longest and 2. easy to care. So gold fish and Koi live long but not easy to care - especially Koi.
My answer is -- the African Catfish. They grow from one inch to 3 feet long. Maybe more. They eat a lot, crap a lot if there is food. They fast for months if there is no food. They live in water with zero oxygen so you dont have to clean your tank for years. If the water dries up, so long as they are moist, they will still live. They eat vegetation, frogs, lizards, chicken guts, dog food, your fingers, stray cats, your mother-in-law. And like the mother-in-law, they are ugly as sin...

I have been able to keep Betta for a pretty long time... the thing is to not keep them in a bowl on your table. Thats where you always see them but they do a lot better in a tank with a running filter and they are very easy to take care of. My betta survived 3 ick breakouts and lots of other fish being in the tank with him. people at the pet stores will tell you that you can't put betta with anything else.. not true. They will chase the others around for a day or so but he wont hurt them. And he ends up ignoring them most of the time.

Goldfish, most probably. They are known for living upto 30 years.
If u feel that they are old common, boring fish, try cichlids, they live over 10 years, are beautiful, tough, resistant to many diseases . Even catfishes do the same, most of them living for ten yrs. The best thing is go and do a thorough study yourself before taking anyones advice. Heres a good link, with very detailed info about many fish varieties. Outlook of the site is a bit outdated but it is one of the most vast fish & small pet index u can find on the web.

Angel Fish are great! I've had a tank for a lil over 3 years and all the original fish are still alive. I have angel fish, bala sharks, and rainbow tailed sharks....they all went 7 days without electricity after a hurricane...all they had for air was a lil battery powered aerator in a 50 gallon tank.

First, get your aquarium set up. you should get a clear out, and sand/gravel. I also rec Bettas are really undemanding to keep; they purely favor a minimum of one million gallon tank, yet they're slightly aggressive. in case you do not pick bettas, indexed right here are some others. *White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Zebra Danios, Rasboras, and Cherry Barbs: those fish are hardy. they're education fish and they arrive in a large number of diverse hues. *Guppies, Platies, and Swordtails: they're distinctly small and colourful. also they're very non violent. *Tetras: they're quite low-priced. Very colourful and education. *a lot of those fish also pick a heater, on condition that they're all tropical,

Goldfish. You could probably try to kill them and fail.

Make sure you ask for the regular goldfish and not the feeder goldfish. They usually have larger eyes that stick out. Kind of like mini hammer-head sharks.
