The "high mileage" oils contain seal conditioners that are supposed to stop leaks. Go with a 10W30 in a high mileage formula and see if that helps.

It probably makes no difference unless with the lighter oil the car engine made some noise. If you are in a cold climate the 5-30 makes sense if in a warmer climate the 10-30 does. Multi viscosity oil does not change viscosity. It has molecules that change shape causing the oil to remain stable throughout the temperature change. A single weight oil is thick when cold and does not flow or lubricate well. When hot the single weight oil thins out and can also not lubricate as efficiently. A stable multi weight oil flows consistently acting like a 10 or 5 weight oil when cold and a 30 weight oil when hot. Going to a 10w-50 oil has quieted down some cars that sounded like they had diesel engines. If I did have engine noise and some smoke I would use that weight otherwise you are fine with the 5w-30 or the 10w-30. They do sell high millage oil just for older cars and they have more wear prevention additives.

I think the "high mileage"oil claims are mostly advertising hype. They may have some additives that do certain things such as expand seals to slow down leaks but if your engine is burning oil, I don't think there is a magic pill for that. A quart every 3K is not much and if you're changing it on a regular schedule, such as every 3K, I don't think it's a cause for worry. I'd use 10W30 or 10W40, a decent brand, and change it regularly.

If 5W30 is recommended for your car and climate, I would stay with that. If 10W30 is recommended at a higher temperature, and it is that temp. in your climate, then the 10W30 would be just fine. You will likely need to switch back to 5W30 in the winter.
I wouldn't waste any money on "high mileage" oil. 1 qt in 3K is not much. Just keep an eye on it. When you start using 1 qt in 500 miles, then you likely need to rebuild your engine.

A quart every 3,000 is fine. If you're using that little bit of oil because the rings are worn, synthetic can help because it doesn't burn off the cylinder walls as much as conventional oil. High mileage oil is just labeling, and doesn't really make any difference.
