Because our culture is creating an population of victims. A society that doesn't believe in personal responsibility. They don't want us to have freedom because they want us to be brainwashed little puppets. If everyone took responsibility for their own lives instead of playing the victim all the time, the liberals wouldn't have as much power as they do. They have intimidated the general public into shutting up and letting them run this country into the ground. People are afraid to speak up and state their unpopular beliefs because of PC rules. PC means going with the flow and not causing any ripples. Ripple makers scare TPTB.
They will continue to strip us of our freedoms unless we all stand up and fight this nonsense. We are individuals with individual rights. We can be respectful of one another and still disagree. It is NOT impossible.

I think this will be the 5th time I have answered this kind of question.
Political correctness is often mixed up with politeness.
Everyone's parents should have told them if they don't have something nice to say they should not say anything, that there are things you don't say to people (this includes asking questions about age, politics, and religion), and that what someone may say to another person in one's family, culture, country, etc. is not necessarily what you should say to them being an outsider.
Also, Freedom of Speech means that the GOVERNMENT will not infringe on the rights of others.
It does not mean individuals will not pursue getting other individuals to refrain from using certain speech, discussing certain items etc.
Any soldier or Marine (includes members of my own family) would take offense at being insulted. Any religious group would...
I don't feel the need to be insulted either.
And further, why does anyone WANT to insult anyone? I never feel the need to slander any person, group, place, etc.
At my angriest, I don't need to be offensive.
It is indicative of low mentality and values.
It is also very arrogant to me, this I-have-a-RIGHT-to-insult-people attitude. I don't understand this mentality.
We as humans should strive to speak and think in the highest levels.

Political Correctness is a myth, and is generally a conservative attempt to ridicule Liberals.
But being offensive has always been looked down upon, and has always cost people who participated in it.
It was politically incorrect in the Fifties to be a communist.
It was politically incorrect to support voting rights for blacks in the South from after the civil war to the sixties (or later.)
It was politically incorrect to question the meaning of courage immediately following September 11, 2001. What happened to Bill Maher's program on ABC?
I'm sure this question will get asked a lot more now that Don Imus has been fired, and will be trying to resurrect his career. But things aren't really very different than they ever have been.

Great question!!! Political correctness is the most dangerous attack against the First Amendment EVER!!!! And I don't know if you have noticed but "PC" has even crept into the actions of our fellow Americans as well! It is very VERY Big Brother to me when I am told how and what I am allowed to speak.

It's hard to care when you hear those rappers use such vulgar speech,
I see protesters carrying the flag of another country while demanding money from ours
and calling us racist if we don't like it.
and the no snitch'in thing
let's just let the criminals rule the place?
to paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr.
He said people should be judged by the content of their character.
So who are y'all looking up to?

There's a difference between social pressure and criminal prosecution for speech. Just because our Constitution protects our right to free speech doesn't mean that we as a society shouldn't strive to create an atmosphere conducive to fairness and courtesy.

We are moving to an homogenized society. Being polite is one thing but political correctness takes it too far and leaves no room for improvement or want of improvement for that matter.

the first amendment does completely allow for freedom of speech.
we also have other freedoms as well.
whether or not to be considerate and sensitive to other people's feelings is also completely up to us.
it's up to each of us to be a nice person - if we want to, of course.
but if you're not being a nice person - then what are you...
