Is there anything you wish you'd known, or any different approach you wish you'd taken when you were around the age of 18? If so, what? Thanks.

How to invest my money...

2007-05-03 05:04:22 · answer #1 · answered by Robert B 7 · 2 0

WOW, that's a good one.
There are so many things, I don't know where to start.
I would have chosen some friends more carefully.
I would have not got together with a couple of guys that I wasted my time with.
I would have started to put money away sooner, for my future.
I would have liked to have known that I was going to get sick, because I would have done more things that I can't do now.
I would have liked to have known that I wouldn't be able to have babies later on, so I may have had one then.
I would have respected my parents more.
I would not have thought I knew everything.
I would have worked harder in high school, and not screwed around so much.

But, now I wouldn't change any of those things because every mistake that I have ever made, I have learnt something from, and I wouldn't be who I am right now, and I like me!

However, I wish that I didn't have to learn some of those lessons by being hurt so badly.

I'm 57 and I wish I'd taken all the advice about completing education more seriously. If you don't have that piece of paper that says you COMPLETED college its going to seriously challenge your earning ability over your lifetime. Forget about partying and having a good time for 4 years and study, study, study! Theres plenty of time for a good time afterwards.

Secondly its most important to start saving and investing money now! the power of compounded earnings over a lifetime is amazing even if you're saving just a few dollars a week the extra time over starting when you are 30 or 35 or 40 is going to amount to maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars by retirement.

Yes, tons of things.
1. Date more people - dont get tied down with the same person.
2. Save money!!!
3. Take school more seriously. I wish I would have finished college instead of partying all the time. Better money with a degree.
4. Don't worry about high school crap. By the time you are 22 you won't talk to most of those people so don't let them influence you.

Study harder in school - an education really IS important.

Don't get all hung up in friends or boyfriends or significant others. You don't need that drama and they all come and go.

Working and saving is important. 35 will sneak up on you faster than you can imagine.

I should have started a savings account and vowed to never touch it.

Only take out the student loans you ABSOLUTELY NEED - don't take the full amount just because you can.

Don't ever live on credit cards. Try to live without credit. Credit is a newer form of indentured servitude and it makes you a slave to the credit card companies.

Don't sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff. In other words, keep your cool, don't be judgmental, give others the benefit of the doubt, but keep one hand on your wallet at all times. :)

Tell everyone you love them a lot more. They will be gone faster than you know.

Good luck! :)

Yes 401k retirement if I started to put money in at 19 I'd be a millionaire at 65. I started at 23 cashed out at 30 biggest mistake ever. started again but I will have to save twice as much as if I stated young. If you're young yet get the book Automatic Millionaire. I forget the author.

Not to worry so much about life. I was told once I graduated high school that time flies, but at that age you think you have forever. I'm only 35 (almost 36) but it has flown! I've been married, divorced and now engaged again. I have 2 kids that are growing fast, too. It's hard to do, (and I'm still learning) but please try to enjoy every moment you have in life. Things just fall into place like they are supposed to! Enjoy today because you don't know what may happen tomorrow.

27, but to answer you, not really. I pretty much have always walked around this world with my eyes open. But to give someone else advice would be:

Care more about things around you in general.
Don't expect every guy/girl to be "the one" (seen a lot of friends broken hearted)
Don't assume you know everything because you don't know shhhhhh
Understand that your a young adult so you have to struggle a while until you find out who you are going to be as an adult.

I'm only 29, but I can answer this. I would have went to college and got a degree before I got married and had kids. But it's never too late. I plan on hitting the books this fall.
