Pharma rep here. I'd try another company. Recently had close friend severed and today he's with another company and says it's WAY better than ours.... less stress, fewer clinicians to call on... the list goes on and on. Truly, it's the same stuff different ways of doing it with different companies; they all have their strong/weak points.
I've been in about 7 years now and it's getting to be the same old thing - all the time. It begins to wear on me but then I think about it for a moment: car is paid for (along with insurance/gas/maintenance) - this alone saves me around $500-700/month, if not more; benefits are outstanding (I don't pay for ANY prescription medications); my time is very flexible in case I have to be at baseball or soccer practice for my kids; vacation days are plentiful; personal/sick days are plentiful (if you have a decent manager); award trips are outstanding; getting to know your clinicians and using that relationship to move your business is nice (if they're so inclined); and the bonuses. There aren't many jobs that pay as well as ours for doing what we do, ya know? I do find it less than intellectually stimulating 80% of the time, but what else is there that meets our salaries and benefits? Not much, I can tell you that (except for device sales). Keep working in pharma and branch out on the side. I'm seriously considering a rent house or two to help with extra income, 'cause I realize my job isn't gauranteed... I'll need some type of income to cover what I'll not be receiving. Real estate might be good but, then again, you have a car payment, gas (which currently costs me about 300-400/month (large territory but just a regular rep)), insurance and everything else that goes along with that. If you do decide to get out, start planning YESTERDAY. Sock away as much as you can (live on rice and beans, rice and beans, rice and beans) because you'll need it.
Feel free to email me for further discussion.
Whatever your decision, it will ALWAYS work out. It always does.

I've worked with a lot of pharm reps and can probably guess you won't make that kind of money in most other sales areas. One thing you could consider is real estate, but I'm not sure that's the best market to get in these days. Same with car sales.

Would you still want to sell Pharmaceuticals? If so, why don't you try a different company, maybe it would be better. I don't know what you could to make the same money that you make now. I have heard these positions make good money.

If you have a 5 year+ proven track history of sales, it is likely the world is your oyster and you can sell in any field that interests you.

can you give ume some inside info? My husbands best friend is a pharma rep. and makes damn good money, were talking 6 figure income. He won't give me any inside info on how it all works. Are you required not to give any inside info? I know i am supposed to be answering your question, I am sorry. I am really interested in learning more about how they work.
