I just saw a news story about online predators going trying to arrange meetings with 12, 13 year old kids. I sometimes chat online, but I don't even want to talk to anyone under 21 (I'm 24), since the maturity level is so low, let alone solicit a child for sex. What makes someone attracted to children? Are there really that many predators, or does the news just play it up? Why are people so interested in it?

Let's start off by shedding the some illusions here.

The Internet is an international region. The average age of consent in the world is 16, the lowest in the states is 14, and the lowest worldwide is 12 ( http://www.avert.org/aofconsent.htm ). So, yes, in parts of the world, a 12 year old girl is at an age of consent. When a parent lets a child on the Internet, they are exposing their child to this.

Also, I know from personal experience, many young women (and sometimes men) frequently lie about their age. I caught my cousin doing this recently. She listed her age as 20 and she is only turning 16. Only four years, but that can make or break the law.

I don't want to make this sound like there are no predators, there are definitely some truly messed up people out there. But it is the responsibility of the parent to protect there children. You wouldn't let your kid loose in NYC alone, don't let them loose on the Internet with EXTREMELY close supervision.

People can trick and groom children easily online. Children are vulnerable and are easily manipulated, but that can happen in the real world too. I would never dream of meeting someone on here as they could be a child or a simple freak, and wouldn't want to get involved with situations like that. I had someone try it on with me in a shop nursey when I was around 3 - 4 but I told someone and the bloke was never found. People get a kick out of the power as they cannot establish genuine loving relationships with people their own age. From whatI can gather, there are a few people out there like this, bit obviously will never admitt it. Im 32 now.

I would say yes, there are quite a few out there.. I have no clue what makes them tic like that.. but I work in child care and believe me.. some people are into that... sick as it is... I'm 26 myself and can't stand a girl under the age of 21.. they drive me nutz ... so I think it's impossible for me to truly understand how some of these people are stuck liking younger children.. maybe they were abused.. maybe something snapped... maybe they just never grew past being a 13 year old in their brain... who knows...

Yes, it is a way to pre screen their victums, it is like turning a kid loose in a candy store. Tight control should be on every computer accessible to kids, Net Nanny, offense content controls, and close monitored activities, Computers are in a family room so you know what is going on. No computers in private rooms. The innocent kid's don't have the best judgements on who is safe and who is not. Sometimes the kid's seek out their own desires as they get more interested in their over active natural desire. Have open private discussions with your kid's. Be the first if possible to have the "Discussion"..
