Spilling a liquid into a laptop can very easily damage it. Soda, because of its stickiness, is one of the worst. You not only get the "water" damage, but it will continue to collect dust and dirt, increasing the risk of damage.
The laptop needs to be opened and all the components professionally cleaned.

Yes, soda, especially colas, can cause problems with electronics. Now, if you've got one of the ruggadized ones, or the minor spill was confined to the keyboard, it's no big deal... just remove the keyboard, and soak it in deionized water.
The good news is that if it got in other places and you turned off the system quickly enough, you can usually fix this by rinsing the individual system components(Take out the batteries! All of them! Don't forget the CMOS battery), minus the hard drive in deionized water. It's not an easy task for the uninitiated since you'll need to disassemble things usually. However, it's about 90% recoverable.

I don't believe spilled soda could slow performance, unless you managed to create a short in a couple key areas.
The problem with liquid damage is that its hard to fix: if you take it in for repairs they will most likely tell you they can't do anything. (And they will charge you at least $80 for it).
If your machine is still under warrenty, then I would try to get the company to replace it. If its not under warrenty anymore, then try yourself to fix it up by opening the case and finding where the dried soda is on the circuits. Use a damp paper towel to wipe it away.

Performance has nothing to do with the soda. Being sticky does not slow the computer down. Well - it could slow it down to the extent that it stopped completely.

Maybe you feel everything is OK except for that slow performance, but maybe there's something wrong in it.
Otherwise, you can ensure that the slow performance is because of that and not because of any spyware, virus,...
If you want to be sure, take it to the shop ;)

Depends if it got down onto the components. I spilled beer on my laptop the other day, but its okay so far. If there are problems, get it checked.

I did the same except with beer, and my hard drive was gone. You will need to take it in and have them hook up a machine to your hard drive and cd drive to have it checked. There might be more wrong then you know.
