Got this problem a few days ago tried to boot up many times and during start up it goes to a blue screen, says Check Hard drive CHKDSK / F Almost sure I've got an unknown virus in the past month or so thats worked its way towards the problem I now have(running windows 2000 for some unknown reason). Is there anything I can do to save it or is it a reformat hardrive situation.
Any help greatfully received

It does sound like a nasty virus. I agree with most of the other answers, try everything to get Windows to load.
I would first try to change the BIOS to boot only from Hard Drive, C, etc.
To get there in Windows 2000 just follow the instructions to get to setup. I can't recall if you hold down delete or F8 but it will say so on your screen. After you get the Settings menu, choose BIOS then under boot sequence, choose, only C, save settings and restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem then try the option of restoring default BIOS settings.
If that doesn't work then disable SMART monitoring if you have that option.
If that doesn't work then disconnect the hard drive and restart the computer again. Then put the HD back in and restart it again.
If that doesn't work then maybe go to http://www.majorgeeks.com, click on "forums" and post everything you have tried so far. Someone will help you get up and running again.

"Inaccessible boot device" means that your computer is unable to read the information needed to boot from your hard drive. If a chkdsk/f was not able to recover the boot sector, then you are probably looking at a format and reinstall.
HOWEVER....there is a good change that only the boot sector is corrupt. All of the order files on the drive may be just fine. If you were to place the drive into another computer as a second hard drive, you have a good change of being able to access it and copying over an data files (pictures, music, vids, etc) that are on the drive. So it may not be a total loss.
Once you have your backup, then do the format.

It sounds lik a bad boot sector. If you can reach the recovery console. run a chkdsk /R which will repair any bad sectors.
If it is data you are worried about, you can always install the hard drive as a slave in another computer and recover your data.

2000 does not like you stopping a disk check (unlike XP) so I suggest you boot it wait till if finishes checking the disk (this can take several hours on a large hard drive) allow it to boot into windows then run a virus scan

if you just moved the computer you might have made something come loose on the board or if the last time you had the comp on did it have any windows updates or did you up date any drivers you could try running the windows disk and run scan disk and fix the boot sector but unplug and make shure the memory and video card are all the way in and look in the cpu cooling fan is it packed with dust look close under the fan not just on top

Maybe the problem is b'coz of virus Pls scan and still you get this you should use disk DEFRAGMENT it will speed up your PC as well as Delete the bad sector ..... I am sure that this is a software problem so WINXP Manager is GOOD ...* NOTE before using and other software use DEFRAGMENT (IT COME WITH XP) if the problem still exists use the above quoted software .....Sorry for poor English

It even says check hard drive in the message, so I would do what it says. You may have to reformat the drive and re-install windows. If you can't write to the hard drive to re-install, then assume the drive is bad and replace it. Good luck.

be sure that your hard drive is still running fine. never use a poor drive. try to check first your hard drive cable or see the jumper setting if it is properly in place. check your cmos setting. if you change your motherboard then you should use your previous motherboard. do this things first before you do reformat. i wish it could help you.
