This is common, but you can talk to your OB who can prescribe you a different prenatal vitamin. I didn't take any when I was pregnant with my first child because I could not swallow pills. By the time I was pregnant for the second time, the chewable ones were popular. My first child came out just fine with me not taking them. Besides, prenatal vitamins did not always exist......

You should speak with your Doctor about changing the vitamins you are taking.
The prenatal vitamins never bothered me at all but made me very Hungry. On the other hand, I had a girlfriend who had tried a variety of prenatal vitamin brands and they all made her sick. Her OB allowed her to take Flintstones - but she was very careful about her diet.
To answer your question - Yes it is bad to skip your prenatals.... while you are pregnant the baby is placing a higher demand on your body for certain minerals and vitamins.
Your body will get what it needs regardless of whether you take the vitamins or not - even if it has to take from your bones, teeth or hair etc.........
Good Luck on the New Baby!

I'm not going to say it's bad, but it definitely helps. Not only do they help you keep certain vitamins in your body that are essential for a healthy baby, but they also give the fetus a better chance of being born without certain birth defects, especially those that pertain to the spinal cord and skin. If your vitamins are making you sick, you should talk to your doctor. They may need to switch you to a different type of vitamin. There are several on the market and a different one may work better for you. I know several women whose vitamins made them nauseous or sleepy etc. If you are dealing with nausea, try taking your vitamin with food. If that doesn't help, you definitely need a different vitamin.

If they make you sick take them at night before you go to bed, I had severe morning sickness and could not take any vitamins cause I would just throw them up, so I didn't all nine months and my son is very healthy he is one and has never had anything not even an ear infection. But it is still better to take them to make sure you are getting proper nutrition, but like I said my son was fine and I know my mom never had any kind of vitamins back when i was born and I am fine

No just eat well, and for the first 3 months take extra folic acid if your diet is deficient. Calcium is also good and you should try to obtain enough from your diet, particularly plant sources which are better for you than dairy sources.
As for the iron in prenatal vitamins you are a million times better off without it, unless you are one of the 1% or less of women who suffers TRUE anemia, that usually existed before pregnancy. Even then food sources are better then synthetic.
Anemia and Iron during pregnancy:
“One of the great unresolved issues of pregnancy is the significance of a low hematocrit/hemoglobin.
Actually, the studies are clear that lower levels are better, and the unresolved issue is why practitioners continue to encourage iron supplementation and chide women for low levels.”
http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/nutrition.html#Anemia
“Despite significantly elevated hepatic iron stores after iron supplementation in pregnant rats this had no significant effect upon blood haemoglobin or transferring saturation levels. However the mean weight of the foetuses at Day 20-21 was significantly lower than that of the non-supplemented pregnant rats. Iron supplements significantly increased the activity of NADPH oxidase in the maternal alveolar macrophages, the primary event in the formation of the phagolysosome to combat invading organisms. However inducible nitric oxide synthase activity was significantly reduced in these macrophages as shown by decreases in LPSinduced and LPS+IFN,-induced NOS activation. Iron supplementation to rats of normal iron status at the commencement of pregnancy did not show any beneficial effects to either the foetus or the mother.”
Iron suppleme.ntation of pregnant individuals with adequate iron status may aggravate oxidative stress [Lachili et al., 2001], with the potential for oxidation of lipids and DNA [Schill and Reilly
2000], a factor which could contribute to preterm delivery,
Iron supplements to rats which have normal iron status at the commencement of pregnancy appear to induce toxicity in both the mother- a reduced immune function as well as to the offspring- reduced birth weight.

Yes, you're not doing your body or your baby any favors. You're body is working serious OT and needs a little extra to keep up. Your baby needs them too for good development.
Mine made me soooo sick too. I tried everything: taking them on a full tummy, and empty one, before bed, nothing worked. So I called the Dr. and they gave me a different kind. It had lower doses of iron (that keeps you from becoming anemic) and more vitamin B which also helps with nausea.
Iron can really hard for some people to digest.

Yes it's bad. The baby needs the vitamins. Talk to your doctor about alternatives. There are prescriptions that they can give you that will not make you sick. I got sick with over the counter prenatal vitamins, but the prescription ones didn't make me sick.

Yes, your prenatal vitamins are extremely important in the development of your baby, and could reduce your risk of birth defects. When mine were making me sick, my doctor told me to be sure to take them with food. And when that didn't work, she told me to take two flintstone vitamins and a folic acid supplement. Check with your own doctor and see if this would be appropriate for you.

You should really find a vitamin that will be okay on your stomach. Do you try to take your pill on a full stomach? That may help you from feeling sick. I would call your doctor if you feel you need to stop taking them. If she says you can ask her what fruit and veggies will provide you with an adequate amount of folic acid and vitamins. But I encourage you to take vitamins.

if you are pregnant - as my wife was last year - it is recommended to take high quality Prenatal Vitamins such as
VITA NATAL by Eclectic Institute $20 180 tablets - this was prescribed to my frail wife by Dr. Claudia Ravens In queens NYC, it really helped a lot
we also used Dr. Robert Marshall's protocol for a healthy baby and mom - see www.healthline.cc - and call them to discuss your issue.
