Spoofing or phishing, is illegal because the person or company pretends to be a legitimate business, and they aren't. What the spoof or phish wants is your banking and personal information. With that, you will then have an identity theft situation and possibly a serious loss of funds. It can take years to straighten out. If you think you've received a spoof or phishing email, send it to the legi company to spoof@abc.efg or whatever the company is. They will thank you for doing that.

Spoofing is pretending to be someone you are not in an e-mail, web site, etc for illegal purposes. Such as sending out fake message saying you are that persons bank and asking for the ID and password.
