he's very temperamental and i don't think he will take it well. my new job is awesome and i can't pass up the opportunity.

Do it in writing, not email. And keep a copy of it for yourself in case he "never got it" or "lost it" or something. And keep it short and simple.

Write him a letter, do not e-mail it to him. I would give it to him at the end of the day, so he can freak out about it at home and not during working hours.
