usb1.1 nothing will happen maybe a little data loss if your sending files to it if its usb2.0 you run the risk of damaging the hardware as it gives out alot more voltage this is why you get errors not advised on usb 2 but 1 is fine

Usually nothing. However, if you were to remove it before the computer has finnished writing to it, or while a file is still opne, you run the risk of corrupting that file. If it is the main directory that is open, you risk losing everything on it.

As I do IT support, I see this probably once a month. Someone plugs out a device without stopping it and corrupts the file(s). It is recommended that you do the "safe removal" to protect your files. Do I do it? Not very often. Only if I have written to the device in the last minute or two before I want to disconnect it.

Depends on what your are unplugging, if it is some type of data storage device you could lose your files. If it is an external burner nothing will probably happen. If it is a usb for wireless internet nothing will happen.

Your data can become corrupted. I did it once accidentally on a SD card for my camera, what it did is corrupted the memory card and made it where it couldn't be used anymore. So personally i would always safely remove it first.
