I'll quote a TV show here: "We'll bring you the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and because we have soccer highlights, the sheer pointlessness of a 0-0 tie."
A game may be well-played and exciting to watch, but a tied outcome is, I think, unacceptable to most of us. Look at it this way: when the World Cup comes around, soccer dispenses with the tie and goes into overtime and finally penalty kicks until there is a winner. And I think the attitude is, "If there isn't a winner, then it doesn't matter." After all, the World Cup games matter - that's why there's no tie endings. And I think the feeling is, yes, you had a great, close, match-up with a tie outcome in regular time... so make the game go to overtime... until someone wins. Look at other sports in the U.S.: basketball and football both go into overtime for regular-season games in an effort to prevent ties, and in college football it's sudden death; hockey goes through overtime and sudden death; baseball doesn't have ties at all (if a game gets called due to weather or some other factor making play impossible while it's tied, the game is continued at a later time).
There's also the saying "ties are like kissing your sister."
Basically, no, many Americans do not understand why anyone would rave about a tie. Only sport I can think of with a legitimate reason for having rules that allow ties to happen is boxing.

I suppose because there were some great shots which in turn resulted in some great saves in order to be 0-0. or the home team was an under dog and they fought to a 0-0 tie, when they had no business being in the game. OR they needed a tie to advance to the playoffs or something. Even in american football a score thats like 9-6 can be a great game, but you have to appreciate great defense to appreciate it. BUt yeah a 0-0 tie is so typical of soccer and really kindof pointless. But whats worst is to have 0-0 game thats was played great all the way through and then have the game decided by penalty kicks, thats pretty stupid.

Are you seriously telling Venado if the ref helped Azul? No mames hahahahahahaha. Its all good.. There is 90 minutes left and will be playing in El Azteca. Cruz Azul has not won anything yet and i say its anybody's game based on both teams performances in the first game.. And no Cruz Azul did not get help from the ref but we all gotta admit the ref didn't call some fouls for both sides. I have faith America will do good in Azteca.. I hope America comes out as Champions. And for those saying we are getting too cocky.. Then i am guessing you have not seen Cruz Azul fans. They have already made a Cruz Azul Campeon jersey already, thats not all either.. They have been talking sh*t as well, yeah were the cocky ones. @Chivistas: KEEP HATING! Pinches ardidos les duele el pinche culo al mirar a el America en la final!

I think draws are one of the things that makes soccer unique.
Unfortunately it is also one of the reasons American sports fans cannot relate to it. We just did not grow up with 1 points awarded for draws.
Plus $200 is not really that bad. If I want tickets for the Lions we are talking 400-500 dollars a pop unless I can get on the season ticket list. American football is very expensive to watch. Baseball fans can relate to the low prices better though.

No but I can't grasp spending $200 for a ticket in the first place. Once you get past that I can't grasp watching soccer. Once you get past THAT I can talk about how good a 0-0 game is. I call that game hockey. If you think Americans actually hate ties then explain why most will tell you Sudden Death Playoff Hockey is one of the most exciting sports. Ok yeah that leads to a winner but come on we want the tie to put it there.

For me 0-0 can be a great game. What I find boring about Soccer is when one team jumps out to a 2-0 lead and then sits on the ball.
I think we're so used to having a clear winner in the U.S. a tie isn't something we like. If they went to overtime after overtime until someone was declared a winner, then I think more would like it.

Most American can't understand it. The love excess. That's why a score is worth 6 pts in american football. Even basketball get's 2 points. Americans love the high numbers.
I love a good soccer game. Especially international soccer. I love to see the passion of countries going head to head. Two teams fight it out and are still at 0-0, beautiful! It is a drama unfolding before your eyes.
I am a hockey fan. I see that passion everyday on the ice.

man yall no nothing about true american sports people. i have played soccer my whole life and 0-0 tie is fun to watch but a 1-0 win in the closing seconds is better. liek the guy said we would rather watch a 21-20 football game or a no hitter. its easy not to score in soccer its harder then hell to throw a no hitter in baseball. so before yall start dissing american sports cause you think soccer is the greatest learn something. i have went to see one of the greatest soccer games in the world when the usa women were in bham. so yes i lvoe soccer. can probley beat all of yall all over the field.

Uh no.. soccer is by far the most boring sport. I can watch it and be amazed at stupid things like offsides? What really is the point of this call? Hey this guy completely beat the defense but it doesn't count because he got behind them? That is the whole point of defense in the first place. I love watching when a guy starts to beat them back and they all run up to make him offsides. Soccer is for the feeble minded. Its easy to understand, probably why the rest of the world loves it who knows. I played soccer on a mens team just a few years ago and never have played in my life prior to this. This was a pretty good league and most told me I was going to suck. Not only did I lead the team in scoring, but I received my teams MVP award and most of them had been playing their whole lives. Such a stupid sport.

A lot of Americans don't understand the sport. Plus, if the media doesn't over feed the sport, Americans wont' care.
Let me give you an example: For the last month all you heard was about the NFL draft. Radio, television, newspapers. NFL Draft. I love the NFL, but that's just over feeding.
Personally, I love both sports. And always will.
