If you would like to see your Betta really enjoy some food net a few mosquito wigglers from some clean standing water and give him 2 or 3 of them. That's their natural food. I definitely think you are overfeeding him. You have conditioned your fish to behave in the manner he does, and it has nothing to do with whether he's hungry or not. Also freeze dried shrimp alone is not a complete diet for any fish, try to find another source, perhaps a dry food or frozen Daphnia, anything to introduce a little variety. Then feed VERY sparingly. It's almost impossible to starve a fish, but very easy to kill one by overfeeding.----Good luck.----PeeTee

Most of the above people know next to nothing about betta. (No doubt they also think bettas only live a year or 2.) Over feeding a betta is one of the top 3 common causes of an early death. (Water quality, and temp are the other 2.) Bettas in nature live a feast, and famine existence. They never know where their next meal will come from so they eat as much as they can as often as they can. This is common with fish.
He only needs about as much food as his eye ball per day. (Assuming you are feeding a high protien food.) A pot belly is a bad sign. Skipping one day per week is good idea as well. Heck you could feed him 3 times a week and he'd live. If you go on vacation for a week. No worries he'll live.

Never feed more than what they will eat in 2 to 3 minutes.
If you feed them once daily only part of their dietary need are being meet. They will not grow to their correct size and you will have more problems with them getting sick. If you feed them two times a day your getting closer to meeting the dietary needs. However their growth rate will be slow, but their over all health will be better. If you feed them three times daily their growth rate will be more normal and they may breed for you when they are ready. I highly suggest that you feed them three times a day. A diet of high quality flakes or Betta pellets, live food, frozen, and maybe even some freeze dried food.

I have regular beta food that I got from the pet store. I only feed it 5-7 dots of those twice a day!
I think you might be over-feeding it a bit...lol
Since its used to eating that much , I would only feed it 15 a day, if i were you anyways...

what your feeding it is plenty. to much will dirty the bowl and just make more work for you cleaning.to much food raises the ammonia levels. Ammonia is caused by over feeding and fish waste (poop). feed your fish once a day at the same time every day. the bond between the two of you will be stronger and more fulfilling. the fish will become accustom to that time of day and communicate in its own way that it's time to feed me. be regular. try not to feed in the middle of the day. this is not a natural time for feeding and food will be wasted.

I only feed my betta about 10 betta pellets a day. Freeze dried shrimp should be a twice a week treat. you shouldn't feed your betta so much. if he leaves any food uneaten, it can toxicate his water.

You can't overfeed a betta. So long as it's EATING the food you put in there you are ok. What's not OK is when you put too much food in and it doesn't eat it. The uneaten food spoils in the water, making it toxic.
