i.e. if it is a five match test series and one side wins 4 but draws 1 and finishes 4-0, is it still a whitewash?

No if you draw a match you avoid being whitewashed

A whitewash occurs when EVERY match is WON.
The most recent example is the 2006-2007 Ashes series in Australia, where Aussie thrashed England 5-0.

A draw is a draw,a whitewash would only be if you win all five. So the answer is No its not a whitewash...

no whitewash means win with 5-0 because if a match draw then its means that in a match the oponent not win niether loss the match.
