Last meaning, how long would you be able to survive without these services? I wonder sometimes what would happen if, for some reason, all utility services suddenly ended (be it from some national catastrophy/pandemic, etc) how long I'd be able to manage.
Hopefully this will never be anything more than a hypothetical.

Forever!

Here is what we ALREADY have:

Well water (with a hand pump for backup)
Three wood burning stoves and all the wood we could ever use
A thriving garden
Lots of wildlife (rabbit, quail, pheasant, deer)
Goats for milk, cheese and meat
Chickens for eggs and meat
A trout stream
Lots of books (but I'd miss Y!A)
We tap maple trees for syrup
Nuts and berries of all kinds in the summer / fall

Here is what we still need

Hydroelectric power (working on it)
Spring house

I could a long life as long as I had food, clothes, and shelter. Thats all you really need.....utility services are a modern convenience. You do not really need heat, gas, cable, electric, etc. You may feel as if you do- but you don't. All you need is a water source (river lake) and matches to make a fire in addition to the food, clothes, and shelter.

Would I want to live this way? Hell no.

I love camping and can survive living in a tent all summer so I really don't know how long i could, but i would give it a good try. With-out water would be a tough one, gas and electricity not such a big deal as people survived centuries with-out it.

If Jeff Gordon or Dale Jr. failed the drug test and was kicked out of the sport it would be huge. It would be the top story in almost every form of media. These are the poster boys of the sport. The story would be so huge it would force nascar's and to release the information in order help keep its drug free image. I hope it never happens I rather hear people say nascar is a redneck sport than a sport with drug problems like in Baseball. Nascar would probably try not to release the information but they would almost have to.

In my house? Not long. If I could get to my friend's place, where she has a well and hand pump for emergencies, I (and they) could last indefinitely. She doesn't use much of any of those things except water, and the pump will work as long as someone with muscles enough to pump it is around.

How about you just didn't pay the bill :) I would eat out all the time take a shower at someone else house and go to sleep early so I'll give myself 2 days because fast food is expensive.

water - no more than a day
electric - about a month
gas - until winter
phone- indefinitely

when we experienced the '05 hurricanes, especially Katrina, I did okay with the 3 days the electric was off.
