Janis....she's number one on my list but Aretha is probably 2nd or maybe Billi Holliday. Janis just reached in and ripped it right out of her soul.
Aretha is probably better technically; has more range, hits the notes, harmonizes better, etc. but Janis was channelling something.

Although I like more of Janis Joplin's songs I would have to go with Aretha over her for shear talent. Janis acquired her great sound by over doing it on drugs, alcohol, and ciggs. without that her voice was so-so at best. Aretha got her sound from just natural talent. I believe great covers could be done of Janis song that could stand on their own but a cover of Aretha would be just that, a cover song that doesn't sound as good.

It's like comparing apples and oranges- can't be done fairly. I listen to Janis Joplin often and I love her voice, style, and charisma. Aretha is amazing too, I just don't listen to that much of her music.

Janis. She's the original rocker queen and she has such a unique voice. She also had such a phenomenal stage presence.
