I see a counselor for manic depression (bipolar) & she said that I don't know who I am. I lived with my parents, then a boyfriend, then back home, then I got married (got pregnant) then got divorced. Moved back into my parents home during my pregnancy. Now am a single mom and live on my own. But I don't know who I am. I am suppose to find myself.

How do I find myself? I am co-dependent on others and I am suppose to break from this and depend on myself. How do I do this? Anyone else going thru this?

To become "self actualized" means :

Self-actualization is the instinctual need of humans to make the most of their abilities and to strive to be the best they can.

Self Actualization is the intrinsic growth of what is already in the organism, or more accurately, of what the organism is.

Maslow writes the following of self-actualizing people:

* They embrace the facts and realities of the world (including themselves) rather than denying or avoiding them.
* They are spontaneous in their ideas and actions.
* They are creative.
* They are interested in solving problems; this often includes the problems of others. Solving these problems is often a key focus in their lives.
* They feel a closeness to other people, and generally appreciate life.
* They have a system of morality that is fully internalized and independent of external authority.
* They have discernment and are able to view all things in an objective manner. Prejudices are absent.

In short, self-actualization is reaching one's fullest potential.

I don't know you , but this much I can say
Be kind to yourself, accept your strengths and your flaws all need to be embraced. Most of all have a sense of humor and relax because it is all a learning curve and in the end we are all human :)
Peace

it sounds to me as though she wants you to find an aspect of your life thats just for you. not for your parents, or your friends, or anybody else. just a way to really reconnect with who you are on the deepest level. dont let anyone think for you or make any decisions for you. dont worry about what mom and dad think, or what the people at work think, or any of that type of stuff.

have you ever known a group of guys who get together once a week or so, to play cards or darts, or watch a sports game? usually only a few of those guys are really into the actual activity, the rest of them are there to escape from real life and just be a guy. on the inside, we're all in need of that inner caveman once in a while. its nice to just ignore the rules we all follow and indulge in what we like. for guys, it means eating junk food, burping really loud, talking about stupid stuff with other guys, etc. or maybe getting some aggression out with sports or doing something outside.

start slow and just do things that need to be done for you. dont try to do it all the time, but pick one day and say "thats MY DAY". make plans to be away from everyone else, no parents, no kids, no anyone. do what YOU want. dont let anyone think for you. watch movies, go shopping, buy something you normally wouldnt get for yourself, eat your favorite food. i think that would be a good start to just getting back to who you are on the inside. little by little you'll start to go after bigger things, the things that you really want inside, but never went for, or didnt think you could do.

My dear, she means that you don't know yourself becuase you have never been independent on your own. You need to find a way to move out on your own and discover life as a functioning, independent, self sufficient adult. You can do it! Good luck!

Move out. Get Your own Life. Make Your own choices. Just don't do it because I said to.
