I've had this problem for years, and the real problem is that my mind races as I'm trying to sleep. Do you find yourself thinking too much, and worrying about getting to sleep?
Here are a few things to try:

When you take a bath, try bath salts, they tend to relax me to the point of sleep.

While you're lying in bed relax every part of your body, think: Relax my legs... Feel your legs relaxing, and move your way up to your head. I can sometimes fall asleep before I even finish!

I have also tried listening to music or the television as I try to sleep. This gives my mind something else to concentrate on rather than my daily stresses.

Try not to resort to drug induced sleep, this causes dependancy and you'll soon have trouble sleeping without! Watch you sugar intake before bed as well, I normally do not eat or drink anything other than water starting 3 hours before I plan to sleep.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

Prayer works pretty good. As, a Christian, I usually find two reasons for sleeping difficulty in my life. Either, I've done something wrong and need forgiveness, or I'm worried about something. Both situations can be remedied through prayer, and I can then drift off in full peace and freedom. Now, I'm not suggesting that those are your difficulties, but if you're a believer, try prayer, it is wonderful.

I was having the same problem for a long time, my sister-in-law (she's an RN) recommended Advil PM, (the sleep aid it contains is not addicting)...I've been sleeping 7 hrs.
I can't thank her enough!

Read something that isn't interesting. Something you have no interest at all. Your brain will start getting bored, and it should help you sleep. Good night!!

Try reading - take your mind of the appointment - to me it is keeping you from relaxing - you need to take your mind of it
