The same way I try to handle all who call on the phone, at the door, or even over IM, POLITELY.
I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses so, clearly, I get few surprise visits from fellow Witnesses. I did recently have some Mormons drop by. I politely informed them it wasn't a good time, please don't come again. They said Ok and left.
It is exactly how I want to be treated if I come at the wrong time, or someone does not wish to talk.

That reminds me of the scene in "Airplane" where the pilot is fighting his way through the Harri Krishnah's jand other people trying to give him things at the airport. At times, I've felt like that with them.

I am polite. I realize that they are actually out there doing what they believe. If I'm not interested, I tell them so, but I'm never rude. You've got to give them credit for putting their faith into action. If they're persistent, maybe it's because your attitude appears to be that of someone who needs what they're offering.

Never fails they stop over while I am outside with the kids. I have told them no thanks and they kept stopping so I ended up telling them I was a Satanist and I didn't believe in their type of religion. Haven't seen them since...knock on wood.

They never come to my neighborhood, but I met one on vacation and he bought me a cherry-frosty thing. He was living in a van and budgeting his traveling missionary money the church gives them.
