Easy. The standard was to swing to the doo-wop sound. It was modified some from the jitterbug of a decade before, but still the same dance, plus regional variants (shag, bop, etc.). The new-dance-every-week thing didn't begin until the twist, ca. 1960, though of course many people consider 60-63 or so as part of the fifties musically.
