I never really wanted to go to the big university where i live. both my older brother and sister went out of state and loved it. money was never an issue. i started dating this boy almost a year and a half ago and now he goes my that big university where i live (the one i never wanted to go to). as this year progressed i thought more and more about going to the school where he goes, i dont know if it because i wanted to be close to home, or he went there or all my friends were going. but i got waitlisted and decided on the university of wisconsin which is far from where i live but i rationalized reasons why it could work, however the day i decided on wisconsin is the day i got into my states university. now i dont know which one to choose. i know some of you will tell me to go to school because relationships come and go but i dont want that to be your answer because i already know that. i want someone to tell me if i should go away or stay close and why.thanks!

There are pros and cons to both.

Going away, I believe would help you as corny as it sounds, more independant, stronger, etc. I guess it really forces you to in away, start anew, start in a place fresh. It gives you a chance to have a new beginning, a new start. Meet new people, discover new things, etc. If you're adventurous, and up to something new, I would say go away....

On the other hand, going to a place near home would be quite convienient. As you've mentioned, you'll have the support of people you're already close to, people you know.

In the end, it really depends on how you want to begin - a new start, new friends,, or with people you already know?

- my opinion, would be to 'go away' :)

it comes down to where you think youll be the most happy. have you done college visits?? im 19, and 2 years ago, i followed my boyfriend at the time to college. im at purdue university in indiana, and never would have even considered going here if it wasnt for him. needless to say, we broke up a week after moving into the dorms. it was horrible and i hated it. its okay now, but looking back i really wish i wouldve considered other colleges. how far is wisconsin from your home? i couldnt imagine going out of state, although sometimes its good to get away and start over. just do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

It would help if you told us what school you ar etalking about. The UNiversity of Wisconsin is one of the best public universities in the US. If you are in a state like Arizona or Mississippi, then Wisconsin is a much better choice. If you ar tlaking about the University of Michigan or Berkeley -- then Wisconsin isn't the best choice. If yor state university isn't the best one in the state (e.g., Iowa State vs Iowa) then Wisconsin is a much better choice.

You are aware that U of WI is not a small school, right?

While the primary purpose of college is education, it comes at a time in life that allows it to provide a reasonably safe environment to develop independence and self confidence. Too close to home and you will be stifled, too many old friends, and you will remain in the "old you" mold.

Go to a good school, branch out, seek new environments, not the same old.... stuff! Grow and learn.
