America is built on a spirit of "can do". We love the challenge and aren't particularly interested in whether people like us or not. Our world view, or at least the one we started with, is very different than the countries that don't like us.
Our patriotism is based, not on our past, but on unity in diversity. We are the great experiment. Some of us are arrogant and usually make the news, but MOST of us aren't as arrogant and loud as the media makes us out to be.

I'm not sure what an "amerian" is, but, as an American I feel that the world has that natural response to dominant countries.
The sad part is, many parts of the world dislike what the current political situation is here. Simply because the U.S. comes off as some invading, threatening, arrogant superpower, it does NOT mean that every American citizen agrees with what our country does foreign policy-wise.
Ironically enough, you state that the rest of the world hates us - yet, I hear and see more people every day that have moved here for "a better life." Now, why would so many foreigners still elect to move here if everyone hated America?

As I understand the dilemma that faces the World it is not the American People "We" are supposed to hate (I Like Yanks) but rather their symbolism of "Their" Government. Some people cannot differentiate between the two.
America and Americans must be doing something right, why else would half the known World be so jealous of Their good fortune and lifestyle?

It doesn't bother me because I can't control it. I don't agree with everything the government does, and I do what I can to voice my opinion but when it comes down to it, I personally have very little control of the world's opinion.
I also think it's insanely ignorant (not you just in general) to ever dislike a whole group of people. You can't lump everyone into a category.
I went to visit Montreal when I was in college. Walkign down the street with my friends we passed several people who felt necessary to say thing like "Stupid Americans". I was amazed because we weren't doing anything other then walking. Not taking up the whole sidewalk not talking loudly or obnoxiously.

Why don't you tell me why they don't like us? What is your opinion? A gentleman from the Netherlands visited Dallas a year ago for his grandmothers funeral and told me one of the reasons they don't like us is because of capitalism. Every time our stock market hiccups, the whole world feels it. If we were socialistic this would not be so.
If in fact, our economy supports and affects so much of the world I don't know why so many want us to become socialistic.
Think about it, if and when our capitalistic system ceases to exist, it will negatively affect the economies of the world.
Let's look at what makes the U.S. different.
We have no history of aristocracy and priviledge. In many countries around the world if you are born poor you must stay that way. You can be smart, have talent, and a desire for a better life but your social status condemns you to a life at the bottom. Not so, in the US.
This is a country of strong survivors. In evolutionary terms, it is survival of the fittest. From our very beginning, life here was hard. The weak perished and the strong survived. If we seem proud it is because we possess self-respect which comes from hard work and sacrifice. We earned it. Our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents worked hard to earn it. From the moment our first American ancestor stepped on U.S. soil they went to work.
The US is a country of self-determination. There are some who can survive on their family name and money, but very few.
(Unlike life in many other countries) Here each generation has to work hard, work smart and create it's own opportunities. We want to be the best that we can be, because in America it is possible to be the best. And because we work hard for what we earn we aren't going to allow it to be taken away easily.
We honor and cherish our heritage. This mentality never goes away because as each new immigrant comes into this country they bring with them their dreams, their determination, their willingness to work and sacrifice so that they and their children and grandchildren can have an opportunity for a better life.
Each immigrant that comes here usually starts at the bottom and works his way up. The point is, that he can work his way up. He may stay a worker earning minimum wage, yet his son may become a doctor, a scientist, or a wealthy businessman. I know of a Vietnamese woman who came to this country, created a new formula for acrylic nails, and sold it for a million dollars within a year of her arrival.
Most of us don't have it that easy. We don't take 3 hour naps in the middle of the day, and we usually don't settle for less than we are capable of achieving. We work 8-12 hours per day, and might take an hour for lunch.
We work hard. We play hard. We go to church on Sunday and thank God for our families, for our health, for our freedom and for our opportunities. We try to help our neighbors when they need help. There are good Americans and bad Americans just as is true for every other group of people on earth. Our mentality is different from most though. As I have tried to show it is a result of our evolution as a people and a nation.
I hope this helps. We have enough self-confidence and self-respect it doesn't hurt our feelings too much if we aren't the most popular.

I'm American, but I don't think the rest of the world hates us. They hate our American Idiot(aka George Bush) because he's a Dee Dee Dee. The reason most countries don't like us is because we are more loose and the only thing that you guys see is the negative aspects of the USA. I've noticed that we, as Americans, seldom have positive things that really demonstrate what we're about.

I believe the main reason that "most" of the world wants to hate the USA is because of several different reasons compiled together.
a) we are probably the youngest nation on earth
b) we are definately the most powerful nation on earth,
c) we have a system of government that most nations try to emulate and few have succeeded but cannot because everyone wants to be heard first and they think that violence is the only way for them to be heard. Look through our own history and you will see that we have not always been right in our own choices!
I am proud to be an American, I am also proud of the fact that I have served my country in both times of war and peace.
The one thing that makes me mad is that when I went to another country, I learned to speak that language but I am being forced to learn several different languages in my own country!!!

I think there are a lot of reasons that other countries do not like us. We have liberal religious view as compared to other countries. We were way off the mark in going to war in Iraq. We are a wealthy country which breeds contempt. Some Americans are way to self righteous and egotistical.

I would never apologize for doing the right thing. Countries that want to condemn us won't step up to the plate and help out. They are willing to let us pay the price in men and money. They would rather blindly close their eyes and let injustice happen. This doesn't mean we haven't made mistakes but at least we try. I had a friend from Mexico who came here and she lived a wonderful life with so many opportunities. It came as a shock to me when she harshly criticized our nation. From that experience I found that people don't care what we do for them they are inherently prejudiced against us no matter what we do.
