Alloys were weak back then, so to strengthen the materials the metal would be folded.

The metal would be heated, folded in half, hammered together, then folded again, hammered together and hammered to make it thinner again, and on and on. Look closely at some swords, and you'll see tiny little lines not in the cutting portion, but on the rest of the blade - that's because it was folded.

Finally it was sharpened and a handle put on, and that was a sword.
