Benjamin Franklin once said: "When the people fear the government, it is tyranny...when government fears the people, it is liberty."
We're living in an age of the people fearing the government, and the government embellishes those fears by planting doubts about our nation's safety and spending billions of dollars to "protect" us. Only problem is that our "crack" Department of Homeland Security (sounds like something Hitler would have dreamed up) is gradually turning America into a police state where citizens are presumed guilty until proven innocent.
You're right: we had no 'terrorist attacks' before 9-11, and we've had none since (no thanks at all to Homeland Security, which is one of the worst boondoggles in American bureaucracy). Government should be there only to protect and serve, not to intrude in our daily lives. The price of living in a free society includes being vulnerable, sometimes, to outside influences (such as 'terrorist' attacks or anthrax scares or Revolutionary wars initiated by "we the people..."). -RKO- 05/03/07

what is the name of the once free nation? are you really thinkg Iraq was a free nation. If you think Iraq was a free nation, you like the facist dictatorship countries that offer no civil rights, and no freedoms what so ever. Iraq was a dictatorship, Saddam did not allow his citizens to leave the country in fear that they would never return. When Iraq went to the olympics, the olimians families would be held in a prison until they returned, and if the athlete did not return the family was more likely than not killed or tortured.
now on to the terrorists attacks. sure there has not been any terrorist attacks on US soil since 9/11, but remember there has been numerous attacks of terror throughout the worl. it happens everyday in Iraq. Sure it happens over there, but it is aimed at the US, is soldiers, and our allies.
lets not also forget the embassy bombings in Africa a few years back, and the train bombing in London.
Just because it doesnt happen here on US soil, does not mean it doesnt happen elsewhere.
The President has been keeping you safe. You liberals bad mouth the president and say he needs to be impeeched for an illegal war, and look, you and I as american citizens are safer now that before.
we are safer because we are at war with the terrorists, and we have sacrificed some of our freedoms for this, look at what you have to go through to fly anywhere now days. Look at the big picture and not what is thrown at you by the leftist media.
Also remeber this. the president asked congress to go to war, the congress approved it, and some might say that is was a republican congress, yes it was at the time, but now the democrats are mainly in power, and they are still approving the war. so if you still think that this is Bush's war think about it, it is OUR war. you probably voted for a democrat who is now in Washington bad mouthing the president in the media, but behind closed doors, he is voting for more money to be spent on the war.

Terrorist is a word the US government is using as a weapon to fight good people.
Look at the American Indians. Are you familiar with the SANDS CREEK MASSACRE of hundreds of them by the US army? They were called terrorists because a few indians could no longer resist the urge to reciprocate the injustice that the US government and Caucasion Pioneers where commiting against them.

Do some research on the goals of militant Islamic groups like al Qaeda.

When you've learned a little, ask yourself if they will leave us alone if we just stop bothering them.
