As a poor girl myself....I would guess you probably smell the laundry detergent from the lower income group. Cheap laundry detergent tends to be heavily scented for some bizarre reason. Also if you air dry (like I do-drying is expensive) then the detergent smell stay stonger.

Probably because it is the type of laundry detergent they use. Americans tend to use strong smelling soaps, perfumes, deoderant and laundry detergent. I didn`t notice this until I came to Japan where everything seemed a bit weak scented. When Costco opened here, just walking into the store you could tell you left Japan and just entered "America" just by the way the laundry detergent overpowered the entire store. I found out it was the "Bounce" fabric softner that was making the extremely potent smell. It litterally brought tears to my eyes out of nostalgia...funny huh?

What groups are you speaking of? I personally prefer that someone smell "like laundry detergent" as opposed to some I have met that stink and smell like they have never seen a bar of soap let alone a box of detergent.

My old grandpa used to say: There are two kinds of people in this world, those who smell strongly of laundry detergent and those who don't.

It's because they do not use fabric softners, you know what you are funny, the fact that they did wash their laundry, you should consider, not how they smell?
