My dishwasher racks plastic coating has worn away from use, and the metal has been exposed to the water and detergent causing rust on key points where my dishes, pots and pans go. Also on the tops of the prongs where the cups and glasses go. I know you can buy those little nubby things to go over the prongs, but what can I do about the rack where the dish sits? Is there a special paint I can put on it to cover the rust? Where do they sell that?

Buying a new dishwasher is out of the question. Also I have been washing dishes by hand, which increases time and water consumption.

Oh, that's a good idea about the thin tubing, I know exactly what you're talking about! I will also see what/ if any appliance stores there are here.

You can buy rubber coating products at Home Centers. They are normally sold for coating tool handles. Can has an applicator and you just brush it on and let it cure. This will keep moisture from "seeping" in and continuing the rust problem.

Look around for an appliance repair center and buy only the racks. They are usually $5-$10 each and you can not buy the paint for that price. If nothing else go to the hardware store buy a thin hose like for an ice maker and slit it lengthwise then slip it over the rust spots. Hope that makes sense. Good luck.

Go to any pet shop that sells aquarium tubing. A specialty store will have several sizes.
