Please check up a book from Outlook Publication - 52 weekends around Mumbai. Awesome book. Costs around 250 INR.

Provides the route map from Mumbai, best way to get to the locations, information on hotels and places to see around.

Peaceful and nearby place is almost impossible as this is the tourist season everywhere. Again "peaceful" can be a flexible term. But let's try.

1. Saswane : This small and peaceful village is on Mandwa-Alibag road. Take ferry from Gateway of India for Alibag. It's about 50 minutes journey. The ferry people provide bus service (fare included in ferry ticket). Request the bus driver to drop you at Saswane phata. But you may have to wait for an autorickshaw to take you at Saswane. It's a fairly long distance to walk. Else you can simply take an auto from Mandwa jetty itself. A beautiful and fairly safe beach, Museum (sculptures) at Karmarkar house are places worth visit. Several bed and breakfast scheme places are available for stay and food.

2. Harihareshwar : It's a bit long journey from Mumbai. You can travel by ST bus from Mumbai Central Bus depot or you can drive, if u have a vehicle. By road, u need to travel on Mumbai - Goa highway. Important points while travelling will be Panvel - Pen - Wadkhal Naka - Nagothane - Kolad - Indapur - Mangaon. Take a detour on your right little ahead of the crowded bus depot. Keep asking for directions after this as there are few confusing tracks here. This is a good seaside place with an ancient temple. You can book yourself on MTDC property. Nice accomodation. Apart from MTDC several bed and breakfast places are available as well as small hotels ( 3 to 5 rooms). You can enjoy food (both veg and fish are available) at various home-based eateries. Several interesting places for strolling in and around the place.

Enjoy yourself.

Happy holidays.

It depends where you're from and what your preferences are. I been to North, South and Goa. The Hill Stations are very beautiful. Very quiet. The Himalaya's. I enjoyed Mahabaleshwar and Goa was to die for. It all depends on your kind of tastes and what' s your budget like. I have'nt been to Pune. I hear it's good. Happy Holidays.

If you are an adventurous person, then you may go to the Raigad fort. You may have to spend a night in Mahad in Raigad district. After that you may even go to the Pratapgad fort near Mahabaleshwar. If time permits, you may also go to Mahabaleshwar.
