In retrospect it seems really obvious, but I totally hadn't guessed it until halfway through last night's episode. Had you guessed it? Had any internet forums or anything?

At first I guessed that Locke was not taking Sawyer to go kill Ben, he took him to go kill his(Locke's) own father. I did not know why Locke would want Sawyer to do it though. Then I started to guess even more. But as you, I did not get it until halfway through the show. When i got that Locke's father was the Sawyer that conned Sawyer's (James) parents, I understood why Locke brought him.

I had not guessed it...although I don't think Locke's connection to Sawyer is as strong as Ben's for bringing Cooper (Sawyer) to the island. Killing Cooper served two purposes...it made Locke whole again and it brought out the killer instinct in Sawyer (James). Locke will need Sawyer to kill Jacob and Ben in order to unlock the purpose of the island. Juliette, along with Locke, and Walt have obtained the islands "powers" That is what Ben meant when he said..."I take what is important to people and I exploit it" That is what he meant when he challenged Locke to kill Cooper in front of the Others...Locke is the key to understanding the island's purpose and Juliette is the key to understanding the other Losties. The anagram that was revealed translated to mean "LOST TIME". I think it will be up to Sawyer and Locke to threatening to kill Jacob and Ben to find out what that means...however that may not be necessary as Ben is about to show Locke the islands secrets...I have a feeling it is not going to be something he wants to see though. I think the aanswers are starting to come around...the powers of the island are beginning to clash with the survivors and the end may be near...for all of them.

Not until you plastered it for everyone to see as a Question. Rather than in the details of your question....
