I think you can get about 40 miles before you are absolutely dry.Have you got the handbook as that will tell you. There is roughly a gallon in the tank when the light comes on . The light tends to go on and off for a while as the fuel in the tank sloshes about with the vehicles movement but then stays on all the time.I always try to fill or top up before the light comes on. I haven't run out on the road for years now.

It does vary car to car, your manual will tell you if you can be bothered to have a look! As a general rule, you'd have about 40 miles before you'd totally run out. It's better never to let your car get that low though as it will be running on all the gunge at the bottom of your petrol tank (which will be substantial in a car of that age) and will clog up your fuel system.

The amount of fuel left in the tank should be listed in the owners manual. If you know your MPG and how much fuel you have left when the light comes on, you can figure it out. The idea is to fill up as soon as the light comes on and not try to stretch it out. You have to have gas to go anywhere, so why try and suck it dry?
Always try and have at least a 1/4 tank of fuel as a minimum. That way should an emergency occur, then you have enough gas to get where you need to go, without having to stop and put in gas. For example, a child may have a serious injury and you need to get to a hospital, or any number of reasons, to something as simple as you overslept for work and don't have the time to stop for gas.

It does vary from car to car as there's no mimimum specified in regulations anywhere - driving style / speed will affect it too.
You could estimate it yourself by finding the tank capacity (quoted in the handbook) and subtracting the amount of fuel taken to fill the tank when the light's come on - e.g. if you can get 55 litres into a nominally 60 litre tank then the 'reserve' is about five litres.

these days there is usually about 20 to 30 miles left out of the tank if you drive about 30mph every where after the petrol light is on
