A diesel engine will run on petrol, but its not good for the engine. It can be used in an emergency if there is no other fuel alternative, but wouldnt want to drive more than an hour or so like that

Putting diesel in a gas(petrol) engine would cause it to run extremely rough, smoke and back fire but will not cause much damage. HOWEVER-- Gas in a diesel engine is not a good thing, do not start the engine and have the tank drained. Gas ignites at a lower temperature than diesel and will cause serious engine damage.

quality.in both cases should be the issue.
Diesel or Petrol is pretty much ,the same(money wise).....different engines systems.

You can't put petrol in a diesel engine or viceversa.

I doubt if either would run. The gas engine would not have the compression to ignite the oil, and the gas in the diesel would auto ignite under all the increased compression of the diesel.
