I have this small problem with my television.

In science today my teacher waved a magnet in front of the TV and made the picture waver. Stupidly, when i got home i thought it would be a good idea to try the same thing with my television.

I now have a rather large (enormous, actually) green patch in the middle of my TV. My question is; Will this receed over time, and if so, how long will it take?

I have turned the television off, but i think my dad wil turn it on when he gets up, around 7, so thats in like 10 hours. How noticable will it be then, cause i haven't told him?

The magnet wasn't one of those super-strong ones, but it was pretty strong. One half of those clicking magnetic round things, if anyone knows what they are.

Inside the TV tube, just behind the display, is a steel plate full of tiny holes or slots through which the electrons pass. If you put a magnet too close, this gets slightly magnetized and deflects the electrons towards the wrong colour dot on the screen.

There is a built in demagnetizing circuit which operates each time you switch the TV on, but this is only really intended to deal with the slight effect due to the earth's magnetic field and it can't handle the results of a big magnet very well.

You will probably have to get someone with a demagnetizing kit (called a "degaussing" coil) to sort it out.

lol the green may go away after a long time if it is not too bad although you should never put a magnet next to a tube tv. i think what happens is the magnet charges the phosphor screen so only letting through one type of light you will find different magnets have different effects, all in all i think your tv may be screwed

Don't worry, it will disappear by itself. You have magnetised the shadow mask just behind the thick glass screen. All TV set has built in degaussing coil around the picture tube. It energise for a few seconds whenever the TV is switched on.

OOps !

Unfortunately if you do this to a colour set the effect is permanent ! You could try blaming your science teacher, they should have warned you not to try this at home !

yeah, youre gonna get busted... at least you can say you got the idea by paying attention in school...
