I am extremely capable of doing so. I am what Family and Consumer Sciences calls a "Nurturer".
What I have learned and other nurturers need to learn is how far to go in putting others before you. Now I only nurture if there is a benefit of some sort for me, it's called the equity theory in relationships. Otherwise, the nurturers will continue through life feeling emotionally exhausted. It should never be a one way street.

YES, I will put family first and foremost before ANYTHING. But another example is I was committed to a bike run this weekend. (Saturday)
Well they recently recovered the remains of a service man in vietnam. They are having his burial this Saturday. As a member of the Patriot Guard Riders I WILL be at his burial. I MUST put a Veteran before myself.

I'm not capable of doing anything else but. Its my job to look after others who aren't able to look after themselves.... and those who would really rather not..... it spills over into my private life, in almost all of my relationships I give way more than I take.
