As long as you have chip and pin, you'll be fine. I visit Malaysia twice a year and always use my Natwest Maestro / Switch card to withdraw money from ATMs rather than taking loads of cash or travellers cheques with me. You can also use your Visa card.
Use Maybank or RHB - I can personally guarantee that you can withdraw from both of those.

Hi James,
I don't know about your bank specifically buy I can use my VISA card to withdraw cash from my Australian bank account here in KL. The machines here only give me access to my VISA credit account, so it assumes that I'm taking a cash advance however I keep this account in credit for travelling so it's not a problem. I don't think that you'll have access to your savings account here, even if it is linked to the card but you could transfer funds from your savings account to your VISA facility to be able to withdraw. Internet cafe's are around so you could transfer funds as needed. I hope this helps.

It works, you will see, even in Sabah and Sarawak (where like five years ago ATMs were extremely rare and only for local bank card holders). When travelling overland make sure you have enough cash though, as there are not many ATMs outside the big cities. The ATM machines even got language options and 'advanced travellers' choose 'Malay' or 'Chinese', of course...
Happy Travelling!

Search for ATMs with a sticker "VISA". You can withdraw money on those, but not on other ATMs. VISA cash mchines are available in Malaysia and they belong to various banks.

Are you in Australia? I'm in the US, and here, anyone who accepts Visa, also accepts MasterCard, and vice versa. Also, all MasterCards are treated the same worldwide, regardless of whether they are debit or credit. I highly assume it is the same situation in Australia, if you are in Australia. By the way, make sure that your card is indeed a MasterCard, not a Maestro card. Maestro card acceptance is not as big as MasterCard. If it is Maestro, you should have not problem using it in Western Europe, as well as at places that accept PIN-enabled debit cards in the US and Canada. Check with your bank before leaving to make sure your PIN number works worldwide.

If it is VISA, there shouldn't be any problems. I wouldn't want to speculate or anything, but generally it should be 'o.k'.
Nothing much I can do to help here...
