It is a man made concept because no other species undergo marriages. It is the price of social and cultural evolution. But than it is worth because through marriage you learn to make adjustments and get care from other one. It is mutually beneficial association and obviously you earn more when work with some one than working all alone.

Definitely marriage is man made institution & people do co-exist without marriage too. The only difference between the two are where as the institution of marriage is only recognized legally, morally & socially in India the second form of living in/cohabiting couples/domestic partners concept is recognized in some western countries along with the institution of marriage. In countries like India the institution of marriage gives you legal rights such as right of inheritance, maintenance, insurance claim, bearing legitimate children along with other matrimonial claims as provided under ones religious or civil matrimonial enactment, but as live in /cohabiting couples/domestic partners do not enjoy any such legal rights in India. If any one wants to forego such legal rights & want to live as cohabiting couple then its his or her out look there is no law of the country stopping them for such, only thing is the moral & social recognition that they won't get, but rather they may get rebuked by certain religious, political & social institutions for their such action, for which they definitely approach the legal institutions such as police for personal physical protection or make complaint against the assault & physical hurt they suffered from these religious, political or social institutions & its members.

It's as essential as you (and your partner) choose to make it.
Some people need a ceremony and a piece of paper to make them feel secure and believe in another person's commitment to them. There are tons of people out there that believe in nothing, so the words and the paper mean nothing, it's just a way to get something they want.
Everything is what you choose to make it...if you don't need anything to prove your love/commitment to someone and they accept your actions, and vice versa, then marriage isn't necessary.
You decide what's right for you.
