this is one of those stupid gameshow questions where it could be one of literally thousands of answers depending on what you are classing as the sum.

For example, you could do the mathematical sum of the equation:

111+six+seven x 2 + 55 - one hundred = 86

but also then you could say you have to add just the numbers appearing in the sum together, e.g. 1+1+1+2+55 = 60.

Also you have the possibility of splitting numbers into separate numbers - e.g. twenty five = 25, but it also contains the word 'five' which is a number, and 'twenty'.

There are so many permutations its untrue. you can even count things like the letter "I" as equal to one in roman numerals and V = 5 etc. Its pretty stupid.

I dont know the answer they are looking for because there are thousands, its a complete rip off that these shows make thousands of pounds (dollars) and they are conning people calling in.

Hope this was helpful!

111 + 6 + (7 × 2) + 55 - 100
= 111 + 6 + 14 + 55 -100
= 186 - 100
= 86

86 is correct per iLy and others. You can not add apples and bananas and all terms must be converted to like terms. Seven x 2 is the only unlike term (banana) except all terms should also be numerical (one hundred = 100, etc.). Seven x 2 = 14 and all terms are now 'apples' that can be added, observing the positive or negative signs of the terms. The other major problem with like terms is units. For example you can not add inches to feet. Everything must be in inches or feet and the result can then be converted into either unit.

111 + 6 + 7 x 2 + 55 - 100
111 + 6 + 14 + 55 - 100
117 + 14 + 55 - 100
131 + 55 - 100
186 - 100
86 is my answer

According to the rules of the order of operations, you have to multiply the 7 times 2 first, then proceed from left to right. I get 86.

It is dependent on order of operations. You must first multiple, then add, then subtract.
