i have not microsoft office but do have word.is there any other way i can design business cards ie funky writing,colour and pictures??

I would personally use Adobe Photoshop, it will allow you to do alot of things that programmes such as publisher will not allow you to.

In addition if you are not very creative you can always get them done professionally, they have a machine at my local train station which is around £2 for 20

Microsoft's web site has many free BizCard templates for M$-Word. So do companies that produce BizCard perforated sheets like Avery.

Start there, learn and then, look for better software.
