Some do, but if you look at history many failed and those that didn't most had to fight a costly war to succeed. Only when a empire is falling apart like the Soviet Union did in the 90's is it easy.

The USA and the PRC are both opposed to Taiwan independence. Hence, it will be very difficult for Taiwan to become independent.
It may not be impossible, but it will be very difficult. Perhaps some intermediate stage is necessary. You should ask some international law scholars: "What is an intermediate stage between Taiwan's current status and complete independence?"
From what I read on the internet, there is much new research on this topic. In general, more and more people are saying that Taiwan could be a colony of the USA.

Because of USA and China.
Taiwan can be an independent Country.
In world we can see the same ethnic people in different countries - like people who speak English in England, New Zealand, Australia....So Similiarly people speaking Chinese ( Mandarin / Cantonese ) can be in two different countries
Example: Singapore, Mainland China
Sure Taiwan will be an Independent Country with its people's wish.
