Ofcourse I agree with "alarm" as to the real content of the word "democracy" in ancient Greece... As for today, we just experience an illusion of democracy. Everything is being controlled by the great financial interests, meaning greek trusts which own the mass media too, laws and ministerial decisions are being issued for their favor, and at the same time every goverment members and their surrounding favor the ones they expect votes or finacial support from. On the the other hand Laws can be strict only to common citizens, while the powerful ones can escape the consequences of their illegal behaviour. So, we have a democracy of many different "speeds" and we come to realize this everyday and everywhere in this country....

Yes, I remember studying in history class that democracy was born in ancient Greece. However, what they did not tell us was that, that democracy was based on slavery. Slaves did all the work, while citizens gathered to practise democracy face to face. It was a direct form of democracy in those days.
Today, with large populations, this has been changed to representative democracy. We elect some people to represent us in the parliament. Do we really?
In fact, we elect those people chosen by the party or by the party leader. Therefore, they do what the party tells them to do; they do not listen to us citizens. And we are too busy with our work, family, etc. to control them. The result is, they do what they want and we just accept it.

Let's just say that we are doing much better use than most places in the world! This includes countries with obviously oppressive regimes (dictatorships, religious law, etc) and some developped countries, where government is elected by the minority due to the system of election or to the absence of poor and uneducated masses from the elections. (Onomata na mh leme, vlepe toys filous mas apo tis Enomenes Politeies).

We found democracy and we gave it to the world
but nowadays we are lost in it!
Democracy needs borders to be effective!
there is a thin line between democracy and anarchy!
we can easily turn to jungle!
Taki I agree!
