For a gourmet burger and fries, I think Barney's is the best place to go.

Some Berkeley classic restaurant recommendations:
(1) Chez Panisse is world-renown for organic California cuisine. If too expensive, formal, or cannot get reservation, try Panisse Cafe, the more casual version upstairs from the restaurant itself.
(2) Cheeseboard on Shattuck for great pizza. One variety per day and it's always fantastic. Inexpensive.
(3) Cafe Intermezzo on Telegraph Avenue near the U.C. Berkeley campus has big salads and super fresh bread. Try the poppy seed dressing. Inexpensive.

Wow these suggestions are over-the-top expensive ! Chez Panisse, oh my! Let me tell you I'm French and the food there is NOT good. Not really French either (not their fault - you can't find the same ingredients here).
There is Kirala if you like Sushi ($$) on Shattuck, by the Ashby intersection
There is the Thai House on Channing and Telegraph if you like mild Thai ($). Excellent ambiance, very good food, for an amazingly cheap price (I attribute it to the fact it's right next to UCB)
There is Naan and Curry on Telegraph if you like Indian ($)
There is a cool little Italian place on Shattuck, near Ashby, but I can't remember the name there ($$). Cool, you can sit near the fireplace
Near northside, on Euclid, there is a Mexican place that makes excellent and cheap burritos, but there again, I don't remember the name.
Hope that helps!

Go to Chez Panisse! Nothing like gourmet organic foods. And Alice Waters is an icon, you can say you ate there!
