Look at it. It's sort of shaped like a mouse and it has a long wire tail.

BTW, the first mouse was a block of wood with a button and a wire "tail". They could have called it a "Goofus"!

layman terms usually take precedence in the market place...

'mouse' is funner to say than 'pointing device'..

for instance:
Tech to customer - "...and now click the right button on the pointing device..."
Customer to tech - "...you mean the mouse looking thingy?"

besides, we already had a 'clicker'....
